How to Apply a Windshield Glass Sealant Correctly


 

What is Windshield Glass Sealant?

Windshield glass sealants are waterproof products designed to fix leaky windshields. They can stand extreme temperatures, most chemicals, vibrations, and harsh weather. These silicone gels are fluid enough to mend areas that are difficult to reach, i.e., the windshield and the gasket. It creates a durable seal by filling all holes and cracks in your windshield. If applied correctly, your windshield will appear to be completely clear! It can also be used on your car’s sunroof, side windows, and RV windows.

9 Steps to Apply Glass Sealant Correctly:


1. First, identify the leak. Run a garden hose around the edges of the gasket and windshield and test small areas for signs of water leakage.

2. Next, apply thick masking tape on the car frame and glass edges to protect your windshield and car's paint. Line the tape accurately, leaving the identified gaps or gaskets.

3. If you notice any rust or corrosion near the leak, sand and clean that area to fix the rusting issue temporarily. You could also paint the area or use a rust spray to naturalize the corroded area. Apply a clear coat and allow it to dry overnight before you proceed with the glass sealant. 4. Now, cut the sealant tube to allow a small flow of silicone gel through it.

5. Insert the tip to your windshield’s leak and gently squeeze the tube. Keep applying the glass sealant until the gel levels with the windshield’s frame and glass.

6. Run your finger along the leak to smooth out the applied gel. As the gel dries, it will continue to flow into the crack.

7. The windshield glass sealant will take 10-15 minutes to dry completely. Remove the tape covering the windshield frame and glass. It’s essential to remove the tape before the gel dries completely.

8. Use a clean rag and some rubbing alcohol to clean off the leftover glass sealant from your car’s windshield. Carefully use a razor blade to scrape away any dried excess from your auto glass.

9. Allow the glass sealant to dry overnight before exposing it to hot or rainy conditions.
